Blog # 11: Revisit the Barclay Paragraph: Write a Barclay paragraph that connects a quote from one Narrative Project with one of our assigned essays.

The mortal one of the narrative projects by Sophia was to not judge someone by their looks you never know their background. The story was about how a man looked poor and was late on payments and stuff. He would trash the place when he came in and would be miserable. The word the storyteller described him at the time was a bum. The person she interviewed hated him and said how he regretted it. The man was wealthy and was one of the top lawyers in Boston. But he had a story, he was so in love and was in the process of getting a divorce with his wife. He tried to get her back, one night they had a few too many drinks and he was crying in her arms and accidentally suffocated her and killed her. He lost everything and nothing mattered to him anymore. This story taunts him to this day because he judged that person and had no idea what he went through. Stating back to Strawson’s article he states how we humans have no emotions and our thoughts are the things that happen. I disagree with this because as you can see from this story the guy felt that he had nothing because of the loss of his wife.

  • This is a good start. Make sure that you begin your Barclay paragraph with a topic sentence–a sentence that acts like a mini-thesis for your paragraph. You want your topic sentence to state your paragraph’s main point. This helps your reader understand what they’re about to read.

My next bit of advice is that you revisit Sophie’s interview and use the interviewer’s name. Practice introducing your sources using formal language.

Finally, expand on the analysis at the end of your paragraph. Elaborate on what the connection means to your argument. It can help to look back to your paragraph’s topic sentence. Explain how the connection RELATES to your paragraph’s topic sentence.
