Blog #8: (200-300 words) Julie Beck covers a lot of ground as she explores narrative’s potentially powerful influence on our lives. Identify at least three notable assertions or other moments in Beck’s text that caused you to sit up straighter and take notes. Explain what exactly caught your eye. Did you react as a believer or doubter? Did you build a connection between the text and the world of the text and yourself?

In the article, Julie Becks explains a couple of things that caught my eye. The way to grasp a story or create a story is a time of an event that affects the way you remember it. She states how certain events such as life career, romance, family, faith, and types of interest can all be filled with stories that connect with these topics. Another set of contexts that also was interesting was that there are no memories from birth which is true but the development of walking and talking has an impact on how we grow. Such as when they are a toddler they can talk and talk about a topic but usually with some guidance and learning can help in the long wrong as Julie says “what goes on in a story…and what makes a good story in the first place.” Also, the way we read something say in high school, is way different perspective when we are adults. McAdams states how he read something in high school and didn’t like it at all but read the same book at a different age and loved it because of the way meaning in the book made more sense than the last time he read it. I did react as a believer because we won’t remember every little thing that happened in our life but we will remember the important or eventful thing. I did build a connection with the text because like stated before our brain is basically changing and the way we see things before can be a lot different now.

  • When I read the text, I wasn’t very open-minded to the text, and I feel like that resulted in missing a lot of the key details and bigger pictures. The end of your post helped me see a new perspective on the text when you discussed why you were a believer. Although I am still doubtful, your post helped me noticed something I missed out on and that I will be looking for next time I read the article.
