Blog #9: Set a timer for 15 minutes and free write your response to Galen’s argument. Note specific moments in his essay as you respond. Some things to consider: Have you ever felt impeded by your “life story?” If so, how? Do you feel like it’s truthful or possible to perceive your self as a singular self or can you relate when Galen talks about possessing many selves?

I don’t agree with the points Galen’s was trying to come across. He believes that stories are false and false is not a bad thing. I disagree with this because it can be someone else’s past life or it can be their life. For example if I am telling a story on how I drew an art piece and it was in the school art show. It could have been me or it could of been someone I knew. But in result it happened in someone’s life and it was made up.

Galen also states on the mental health aspect, how people will tell their story but always puts them in the “good light” which he claims is not true. I feel if someone is in a rough patch or something and reflecting on their actions in the past and thinks of the positive side of it can help the person of the good side of them. There are many concepts that most people leave out some of the bad things of a story because they are either uncomfortable with it or they just want to think not negative and know there was some type of good in that situation.

I feel everyone has a life story that isn’t told and is locked up. In society we all think about judgement itself. There is no escaping. The lock ups that hold us back can prevent multiple things. It is a social norm that expects us to mess up but to keep it to ourselves due to the way it can affect society or the way the person looks at a person. We all think after one talk with the person they are either weird or is “normal”. There is no normal everyone is there own unique self. It’s the way one story or one conversation affects them all.

  • Fantastic. I love how you incorporate the idea of social norms and how those can impact how we tell (or don’t tell) or EXPERIENCE our stories.
